Pippo Delbono is één van de meest onconventionele theatermakers van Italië. Hij werkt niet alleen met professionele acteurs, maar ook met opmerkelijke amateurspelers, waaronder een doofstomme man, een psychiatrische patiënt en een Noord-Afrikaanse asielzoeker. Delbono bestormde met succes de internationale theaters en de grote festivals, zoals het Festival van Avignon. Hij werkte samen met beroemde kunstenaars zoals Pina Bausch en ontving een hele reeks belangrijke theaterprijzen.

The Italian director Pippo Delbono is one of Italy's most unconventional theatre makers. "Part theatre, part dance, part carnival, part music; the work of Pippo Delbono is not easily categorized. (New York Times)After his theatre studies - which he incidentally did not complete - Delbono studied oriental dance, performed with Pina Bausch and in the meanwhile, made his own productions.

Questo buio feroce (This Wild Darkness) is based on the autobiographical essays of American author Harold Brodkey who died of AIDS. Delbono made a surprising performance about life and death in a compelling series of scenes, seethingly dark and poetic. Delbono's own company consists of a group of remarkable people; in addition to a number of professional actors, there is Bobó, a deaf-mute man who Delbono met in a psychiatric institution, and Fadel, a North African refugee. He worked with street artists, the homeless, rock musicians and children with Down's syndrome.
